When we perform most of our dental services in our two Joondalup locations, we use needles to administer a local anaesthetic to the area we are going to work. For most of us, trips to the dentist have always been that way from childhood. The anaesthetic numbs the area around your teeth and the dentist is able to do the work painlessly.
But sometimes the needle going in can be painful. We know that and do everything we can to accommodate our patients, but there is still some pain associated with the process. The other alternative as of right now is sleep dentistry. But what would it be like if your next anaesthetic was delivered in a nasal spray?
In the US, a new product called Kovanaze has been approved for use. It is administered intranasally to the side of the nose in which the dental work is being done. The anaesthetic is a combination of tetracaine HCl (an anaesthetic) and oxymetazoline HCl (a vasoconstrictor).
The spray is used for some procedures and some teeth but not on everything yet. Unfortunately, it is not yet cleared for use in Australia. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t eventually see it used here after it has been used in the US for a while.
Have You Tried Sleep Dentistry?
Even though we can’t offer Kovanaze yet, we do offer sleep dentistry for those who are very sensitive to pain, are afraid of going to the dentist or both. Sleep dentistry is a great alternative to local anaesthesia. All you do is come in, sit down and relax as we administer a general anaesthetic.
The sensation is more like a relaxing nap than a trip to the dentist. When you wake up, all of your dental services have been completed. Our friendly, professional staff treat you like a member of our family and are great at making sure you have a great experience.
