We would like to explain the basics of implant dentistry. We offer implant surgery, among many dental services, in our office, located in the City of Joondalup. Here are the basics of what to expect and when to consider dental implants.
Dental Implant: What is it?
A dental implant is like an artificial tooth root that is implanted into the bone. It can then hold an artificial tooth. Implants can be done one at a time or a person can have an entire set done. The material used for implants is biocompatible. It is able to bond with the organic material of the bone and form a strong base.
How Long does it Take?
The length of time depends upon location and the type of bone. It can take from four months to nine months for an implant to be fully incorporated into the teeth. The front lower jaw area usually takes around four months. The back upper jaw can take as long as nine months. The rest of the mouth is closer to six months.
Can Anyone Have an Implant?
The short answer is, “no.” A dentist has to examine your mouth and your medical history to determine your suitability.
Advantages of Implants
They are the most stable of any tooth replacement. They don’t damage adjacent teeth. They also help prevent bone loss.
What is the Procedure?
The gum gets folded back. Then, the dentist drills into the bone and inserts the implant. This can be done with local or general anaesthetic. Usually, the dentist covers the implant over and leaves it alone until it is osseointegrated. After a month, the dentist can usually begin the work of creating your crown or bridge.
Why are Implants Expensive?
Implants are expensive because they are extremely complicated. They take a lot of work, a lot of precise movement and a lot of expensive materials.
