Among our full range of dental services, we provide teeth whitening here in our Joondalup office. We would like to explain a few basics about teeth whitening for you here.
How it Works
Teeth whitening is usually done with bleaches or oxidising agents. The most popular is hydrogen peroxide. However, if it is done too often or for too long, it can cause irreparable damage to your teeth. Any solution that uses more than 6% peroxide should only be applied to your teeth by a registered dental practitioner.
How it Feels
You may feel a bubbling sensation on your teeth as the solution bubbles. You may also feel pain deep within a tooth while the bleaching agent is touching your teeth. Some people end up with achy teeth for a few days and others have heightened sensitivity when drinking cold beverages or biting into some foods.
What are the Potential Side Effects?
There are some potential side effects when having your teeth whitened. They can be permanent or temporary. Teeth can have heightened sensitivity. Enamel can be altered. Resin-based fillings can be slightly degraded. Your gums can become inflamed. You may receive chemical burns.
Due to these possible side effects, we always assess your teeth to determine whether or not your teeth are suitable for whitening.
How Do We Assess Suitability for Whitening?
We provide a thorough examination of your teeth to make sure they are suitable for whitening. We examine the overall health of your mouth. We check for yellow or grey discolouration and determine the cause. We discuss the best method for whitening your teeth. We let you know if you have any factors that may undermine or otherwise influence the whitening process.
We also identify any areas where your gums are recessed and discuss the possibility of tooth sensitivity with you.
