Do I Need Dentures?
Your dentist will examine your mouth and determine if you will require a denture. There are several different things that will be assessed, including looking at existing work undertaken on your teeth, the health of your gums and natural bone, and also looking at the health of your existing teeth.
How Does the Denture Procedure Happen?
Upon the decision to go ahead with a denture, your dentist will explain every step of the process, and also all costs associated with it.
As a general rule there may be up to four appointments required, although it can be as little as two.
The Denture Procedure
- Initial impressions/moulds are taken of your upper and lower teeth, so a special tray can be fabricated that fits your mouth perfectly.
- Secondary impressions/moulds are taken using the special tray, and a highly accurate mould of your teeth and gums is recorded. This mould is then sent to a dental laboratory so a trial denture can be created. At this point in the process, your teeth’s shade will be taken.
- The laboratory will complete the metal frame work, and using the wax mould of your teeth and gums a fit is tried. Any adjustments for fit and comfort can be done at this stage, and it is ensured that the teeth bite together correctly too.
- At this stage, your new denture is fitted to you.
It can take a little time for you to get used to wearing your new denture, and this is completely normal.
You may notice that your speech may be affected, and you may even have some minor discomfort. While both are normal, please advise your dentist if any discomfort continues.
Note that dentures are only worn during the day (or while you are awake), and can be kept in a sterile solution while you sleep. This also gives your gums a chance to ‘rest’.
Cleaning Your Dentures
It is important that your denture is kept clean at all times. This will include rinsing and brushing throughout the day. Your dentist will give you full instructions upon fitting your new denture.
