Dental implants are the modern, high-tech solution to missing teeth. They are almost exactly like having your natural teeth back, but more durable and more easily cleaned. The main objection for many is that they cost more than dentures. Here is an overview on dental implants.
What are Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial replacement tooth roots. They are inserted into the bone exactly where the root would be. They are then used to lock down a replacement tooth or a bridge. The tooth or bridge stays in place as securely as your natural teeth. They are seen as the best solution for those who have lost teeth because they are the closest thing to natural teeth that is available right now.
The material for the implants is ceramic or bone-like and is designed to be assimilated into the bone just like a natural tooth root would. There are currently two designs for implants. The preferred design fits into the space where the root was. For those who have compromised bone, there is also a design in which a custom-made metal framework is placed on top of the bone instead of in the bone.
Who is Suitable for Dental Implants?
To receive dental implants, your oral health has to be reasonable. Your state of overall health must be good and you need enough bone to hold the implant in place. Your gums also have to be healthy enough to support dental implants.
Chronic problems such as bruxism or diabetes can decrease your chances of a successful implant significantly. So can drinking alcohol or smoking.
How Long Does it Take?
The dental implant process can take up to nine months but can be more like seven and a half if everything goes perfectly. The root is inserted into your jawbone and the gum is sewn over it to cover the hole. A post is attached to the implant later and an artificial tooth is attached to the post.
