There comes a time in everyone’s life when they need a wisdom tooth extraction. As one of the foremost providers of dentistry in Perth, we have extracted a lot of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth don’t come in until one is around 17 years of age. They are the only teeth that don’t have “baby teeth” to precede them. This is problematic because wisdom teeth have to fight their way through a fully-developed gum.
You probably can’t remember the pain of “teething” when you were a child, but wisdom teeth hurt even more thanks to your gums being fully developed by the time you are 17. When the rest of your adult teeth erupt, they do so through a gum that has been “prepared’ by the presence of the baby teeth that fell out.
There are two possible reasons for wisdom tooth pain that necessitates an extraction: pericoronitis and tooth decay.
Pericoronitis is an infection around the wisdom tooth. It happens because the wisdom tooth can’t make it all the way through the gum. Unfortunately, this is a very efficient way to cause an infection. The structural deficiency is not going to go away and the only option is to have the tooth extracted.
Once the wisdom teeth finally erupt, they are in a position that is difficult to brush, floss or fully clean. This makes wisdom teeth more susceptible to tooth decay and eventual tooth pain. Wisdom teeth are not worth filling because they tend to decay much faster than the rest of the teeth. It is best for the patient to remove them at the first sign of pain and decay.
After a wisdom tooth extraction, you will probably experience irritation, swelling and pain for a few days. We will provide an aftercare program for you. When appropriate, we will recommend an analgesic painkiller, usually Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.
