If you are uncomfortable about your dental appearance and thinking about dentures or dental implants, you are not alone.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), approximately 27% of Australians over the age of 15 years are uncomfortable about how their teeth look. Not surprisingly, the poor and uninsured are the most likely to feel uncomfortable about their dental appearance.
Though the report was just released, the statistics are from 2013. In 1997, approximately 20% of Australians were uncomfortable about how their mouths looked. That number increased to 27% by 2013. 31% of females feel uncomfortable, while only 23% of males feel that way. 30.9% of uninsured people are uncomfortable, while only 23.3% of those with insurance feel that way.
For those who lived in households making less than $30,000, 33.1% said they were uncomfortable about their dental appearance. Of those in households making more than $140,000, only 18% felt that way.
The pattern of dental visits was disturbing to dentists, who know regular visits are the key to good oral health. 62.1% of adults surveyed in 2013 said they had been to the dentist in the last twelve months but 7.9% said they had never been to a dentist or hadn’t been to one in five years.
